Abstract
Ibn Sina is one of the first Muslim philosophers who discussed conjecture and what it is in a systematic way in his works. In this article, by using analytical-comparative method, the basic question is answered, what is the difference between Mulla Sadra's and Ibn Sina's views on what is guesswork and its function, and to what extent Mulla Sadra is indebted to Ibn Sina in this debate. . Ibn Sina's view on conjecture has changed during his intellectual life, and we are faced with two theories, one is the standard theory and the other is a revised theory in Ibn Sina's works regarding what conjecture is. Philosophers after Avicenna, including Mulla Sadra, while not paying attention to these two approaches of Avicenna in explaining what is guesswork, have had a consolidated reading of his works, based on which thought is the movement of the mind to discover the middle ground. This movement is actually a kind of mental struggle among the information to discover the middle ground. But the guess of discovering the middle ground instantly without the need of movement and single-mindedness, and when the guess reaches its peak strength, it is called intelligence. Mulla Sadra also follows the same unified reading of what is conjecture in his works, although he has differences with Ibn Sina in some cases, among which we can discuss the function of conjecture in the field of perceptions or confirmations, conjecture and levels of reason, the role of reason.
